Mixed Methods for Studying Network Dynamics
Claire Bidart (CNRS, France) & Michel Grossetti (CNRS, France)
The question of the dynamics of relationships and networks is now crucial to the research on social networks. It is indeed necessary to exceed the usual limits of network analysis, which is its tendency to produce static representations of social ties, while they are constantly changing. One way to progress on this issue is to combine qualitative and quantitative approaches. The former allows to create more realistic data and the second to formalize and compare these data. Moreover, changes in networks are (at least partly) linked to changes in relations, and these two dimensions need to be analyzed jointly. The proposed session is dedicated to the presentation of studies involving empirical data collected with interviews and/or comprehensive questionnaires for studying dynamics of social relations and networks.
