This Mini Symposium is organised by the Institute for Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and forms part of the project "Seminaris sobre l’accés a l’energia sostenible i el maneig de recursos naturals al sud d’Africa: La importància d'un procés d'avaluació integrat i participatiu" sponsored by UAB's Fundació Autònoma Solidària (Grant FSXXXII-09). This project aims to increase student awareness of the complex reality surrounding energy and environmental issues in Southern Africa, as well as of the importance of involving local actors in the transfer of technology through participatory processes and integrated assessments.

These initiatives are in turn set within the wider context of the EDULINK II project PARTICIPIA −Participatory Integrated Assessment of Energy Systems to Promote Energy Access and Efficiency. PARTICIPIA is a co-operative effort between three universities from Southern Africa, Stellenbosch University (South Africa), the University of Botswana and the Polytechnic of Namibia, five universities from Europe, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain), the University of Bergen (Norway), Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain), Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Spain), and two international organizations, FAO and NEPAD. PARTICIPIA is coordinated by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain).
